Survival in rough seas - Elective course for instructors

During the establishment of the area emergency in the North Sea the focus lay on several factors which influence survival in cold rough seas. This has resulted in increased knowledge in a number of key areas and several improvements, especially in personal rescue equipment. In connection with the implementation of the new rescue equipment OilComp was commissioned by the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association (former OLF) to make curricula and develop a specialization course for instructors at the country's security centers within sea rescue.

Two courses were conducted in Denmark and Norway during the winter 2004/2005. Among the participants were instructors from safety centers, and personnel from both employee representatives and offshore HSE departments of companies in the oil industry.

During these courses there were given theoretical and practical updates on the factors that influence survival in cold rough seas, treatment of hypothermia, rescue techniques and the latest in survival suits and life jackets. After completing the advanced course the participants should, through theory and practice, have acquired knowledge and skills that qualify them to instruct offshore personnel in the use of new helicopter suits, emergency breathing equipment and rescue and evacuation techniques.
