Survival in rough seas – literature study

A number of factors affect how long a person can survive in rough seas in winter. To get an overview of the factors that influence survival and prolong the time a person can survive in cold water, it is important to define emergency response time, plans and resources in connection with oil operations in the North Sea.

In this Norwegian Oil and Gas Association (former OLF) project from 2003, OilComp was asked to investigate and gather relevant information about this important subject - survival in rough seas during winter time. The report and findings from this literature study formed the basis for the projects OilComp later conducted for the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association within the field of area emergency response.

Also, instructors at safety centers and HSE personnel from companies in the oil and maritime industries have used findings from this project in their work.
